Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

We like to start our visits off with a little dune climbing. The entrance is 5 miles north on M-109 from Empire, MI, and there is an entrance fee, so we recommend carpooling if you can. The low-key way to do the dunes is to climb to the top of the first, enjoy the view of glen lake, and then head down when you're done (that is the only way we do it).

You may ask yourself why you are huffing and puffing your way up the dune for this view of the parking lot, but its worth it. Running down and sinking into the sand with each leap is pure joy. Our family has been enjoying it since before we seesters even existed πŸ˜„

The hardcore way is a 3-4 hour hike up and down a handful of dunes until you reach Lake Michigan. If you're going to do that, be prepared with plenty of water and patience for the extra work it takes to walk over sand.

We get our view of Lake Michigan the easy way, at the #9 lookout during this 7 mile scenic drive. The view is stunning and every time we've visited, the colors have been spectacular. Make sure to get the visitor's guide (free) when you enter.

If you want to experience it the hard way, you can climb down to the lake. Just make sure you heed the sign warning how strenuous it can be to climb up, and that you'll get fined if you end up needing a rescue. It takes most 1-2 hours to climb back.

You might also want to try out,
Platte River Tubing
A relaxing 2 hour float down the river that ends in Lake Michigan. You can choose from Riverside Canoe Trips or the Trading Post. Bring a floating cooler and some fun snacks to enjoy as you let the river take you on a slow nature tour. Oh, and make sure its a warm day, it is no fun to be on the water for 2 hours with the chills (if you have any doubts, canoe instead).

The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail
The Friends of Sleeping Bear has a great interactive map for your options on bicycling the area.

Manitou Islands
You can take a ferry from leland (which is 45 minutes north of sleeping bear), over to the south or north islands- which are visible from the dunes. Research both before you head over to either because the park doesn't provide any services.

Where to Eat- The Cherry Hut

It may be a 30 minute drive from the dunes, but we think the Cherry Hut is worth it for this step back in time to the 50s. You can get every type of cherry product imaginable, a refreshing cherry ade drink, or the cherry chicken salad. Of course, we recommend the pesto grilled cheese.

Thank Jesus for Grilled Cheese πŸ™Œ

Yes, we are extra

Oh, and there are two locations that show up on google maps. You want 211 N Michigan Ave, Beulah, MI.
